The Power of Art in Activism
The Democracy in Action Convening
A visual storytelling workshop led exploring how photography and film have always been tools of resistance, truth, and transformation.
WHY IT MATTERS
✱
WHY IT MATTERS ✱
Visual Art as Protest, Proof, and Power
From Emmett Till’s open casket to cellphone footage that sparked global protests, the camera has never been neutral. This workshop equips participants to recognize visual media as both a mirror and a megaphone. Using smartphone photography, short video, and real-time prompts, we guide people in capturing their own lived truths, turning single moments into counter-narratives that matter.
Agenda: What To Expect
Reflect: Interrogate the dominant narratives you’ve internalized
Capture: Use your phone to document your own truth
Share: Discuss, decode, and define what story you’re telling
Repeat: Leave with tools to keep telling stories that shift culture
Our Anti-Racist Narrative Approach
We center concealed, resistance, and transforming stories.
We unpack dominant narratives.
We invite participants to challenge what’s missing, not just what’s visible.
We use art to imagine new futures
Images That Changed Everything
A single frame can destroy a lie. Each of these images disrupted the status quo and forced the world to confront injustice.
My Work Examples
To show how visual storytelling drives impact, we share select pieces from RED SQUARED’s archive, short films, campaigns, and community portraits that confront dominant narratives. Whether capturing stories of the formerly imprisoned or farmers bringing life to their land, each project reflects our belief that the lens is a tool for both resistance and repair.
Bring the Workshop to Your Campus, Conference, or Community
We offer this as a 60-minute workshop, with optional deeper versions for multi-day trainings, camps, and residencies. Can be paired with media training, oral history projects, or a live exhibit.
